Invitation wording

When the wedding is casual

A backyard, a barn, a long lunch: a casual wedding wants a card that sounds like the day. Write the way you would say it, first person if you like, and let the paper stay beautiful. Casual wording on good paper reads as relaxed, not careless.

Traditional

P&E Priya & Etienne INVITE YOU TO CELEBRATE THEIR MARRIAGE WITH FOOD, DRINK AND DANCING SATURDAY, THE TWELFTH OF JUNE AT ONE O’CLOCK THE OLD RECTORY

Priya & Etienne
invite you to celebrate their marriage
with food, drink and dancing
Saturday, the twelfth of June
at one o’clock

Third person and complete, so it sits well with older guests, but the second line says the day is a party.

Warm

P&E Priya & Etienne ARE GETTING MARRIED AND WE’D LOVE YOU TO COME SATURDAY 12 JUNE 2027 AT 1PM THE OLD RECTORY

Priya & Etienne
are getting married
and we’d love you to come
Saturday 12 June 2027
at 1pm

The news, then the ask, in the words you would use on the phone.

Modern

P&E Priya & Etienne EAT, DRINK AND BE MARRIED. SATURDAY 12 JUNE 2027 AT 1PM THE OLD RECTORY

Priya & Etienne
Eat, drink and be married.
Saturday 12 June 2027
at 1pm

The well-worn line, kept because it is still the shortest way to say what the day is. Swap it for your own if you have one.

What people ask

Can a casual invitation still be printed?
Yes. The paper sets the occasion, the words set the mood. A relaxed line on a well-made card is the combination most couples now choose.
How do we say “dress casually” without sounding sloppy?
Name what you mean: “Garden party attire” or “Come comfortable, it’s on the grass.” Put it on the website, where there is room.
Is first person fine?
Yes. “We’re getting married” is now common on cards. Keep one voice from the first line to the last.
