Invitation wording

When you come from two faiths

An interfaith card is read by both sides of the family, so lead with what you share: the marriage and the two families. Name both traditions in one line if you like, and keep anything only one side would understand for the ceremony itself.

Traditional

MR AND MRS VIKRAM RAO AND MR AND MRS PAUL MOREAU REQUEST THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY AT THE MARRIAGE OF THEIR CHILDREN P&E Priya & Etienne SATURDAY, THE TWELFTH OF JUNE AT THREE O’CLOCK THE OLD RECTORY

Mr and Mrs Vikram Rao
and
Mr and Mrs Paul Moreau
request the pleasure of your company
at the marriage of their children
Priya & Etienne
Saturday, the twelfth of June
at three o’clock

Both families host, one per line, in words neither tradition owns. Most interfaith ceremonies are not held in a house of worship, so “pleasure” is the form.

What people ask

Should the invitation name both religions?
It can, but it does not have to. “In the traditions of both their families” says it without asking guests to know either one. Your website can explain the rest.
Is it “honour of your presence” or “pleasure of your company”?
“Honour” if the ceremony is in a house of worship, “pleasure” anywhere else. A hotel, a garden or a hall takes “pleasure”.
Where do we explain the customs?
On your website: a short paragraph on what will happen and why, so guests from either side can follow along. Guests who know neither tradition will be glad of it.
